YOUR STUDENT CAN DANCE!

In case they haven’t shared, we have all been learning how to swing dance every Thursday in class.  All YHS Band students are now equipped with stunning swing dance moves which Ms. Kluga hopes they will use at our event!  (Now, they just have to get up the courage to ask someone to dance :). This Thursday, we are looking forward to working with the professional dance instructors!

Swing Dance Etiquette

Everyone knows it takes a lot of guts to ask someone to dance!  (And, it doesn’t matter who does the asking…lady or gentleman).  The correct answer when asked to dance is “Yes.”  As we’ve been learning in class, you should introduce yourself to your partner at the beginning of your dance, and thank them at the end of your dance.

YHS MUSIC DEPARTMENT FESTIVAL TRIP – SAT. 5/21

After two long years, we are absolutely thrilled to offer our students this uniquely home-grown music festival opportunity! Working with the talented staff of Rhythms International Music Festivals, Dr. Bhasin, Ms. Stock, and Mrs. Kluga has created our very own festival that will take place at YHS. Each band, choir, and orchestra ensemble will perform for, and be adjudicated by, a panel of internationally recognized music educators. After each performance, the judges will join our students on stage to offer feedback and musical advice in a 45-minute clinic. Then, to celebrate our music festival performance, we will enjoy time together at Six Flags Great Adventure.

Your student’s personalized payment information and additional details were sent home on Friday. Attached you will find a general information sheet, permission slip and health form. Please return these completed forms with your trip payment by this Friday 4/8. Please reach out with questions.

If you are interested in spending the day with us as a chaperone, please e-mail Mrs. Kluga.

NYSSMA CONGRATS!

To our students who participated in this weekend’s solo festival – BRAVO!! You challenged yourself by preparing scales, a solo, and sight-reading. Take a moment and recognize the musical growth you have experienced these past 6 weeks – this is the true win of NYSSMA. Mrs. Kluga is SO proud of your progress, and you should be so proud of yourself!

SWING DANCE CONCERT – SAT. 4/23

Dust off your dancing shoes! We are excited to bring back this annual community event, featuring 1940’s music, dancing, ambiance, and our talented students. Our Swing Dance Concert is Saturday 4/23 at 7:00pm in the YHS GYM.  Swing Era attire is encouraged. Open to the community!

A big part of the fun of this event is working together towards its creation; making decorations, setting up the gym…and planning your Swing Era outfit J.  It’s a huge logistical endeavor, and we would so appreciate your help and time!

PARENT HELP NEEDED

Parent volunteers will be needed to make this evening a success (food donations, food service, set-up/clean-up, etc).  Please see the e-mail from parent organizer Sarah Gambetta with ways you can help.

STUDENT HELP NEEDED

All YHS Band students are invited to help decorate the gym on Saturday 4/23 from 8:00am – 4:00pm, and clean up from 10:30pm-12:00am.

Sign-up sheets are available in the band room.

APRIL IS JAZZ APPRECIATION MONTH

Jazz is a uniquely American art form, and our Swing Dance offers students the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the music, artists, and pop culture of the period. This year we studied Swing Era icons Glenn Miller and the Andrew Sisters. We look forward to performing their chart-topping hits, In the Mood, and Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy for you at our Swing Dance.
