JAZZ BAND REHEARSAL

Our next rehearsal is Thursday 5/12 from 6:50-8:30. Your homework, professional recordings, and sheet music are posted on Dashboard. This is our last regularly scheduled rehearsal of the year (…sniff, I have loved our time together!!)…and the last before our concert!

GRAND FINALE DRESS REHEARSAL TUESDAY 5/17, p.9

All Concert Band and Wind Ensemble students – please mark your calendars to attend this rehearsal.  We will practice performing our spring concert “grand finale” on stage together.

SPRING CONCERT WED. 5/18

Our Spring Concert will take place on Wednesday, 5/18 at 7:00pm in the YHS Auditorium. Your students and I look forward to performing for you!

  • Students will need to arrive early to warm up.  Please have your student at YHS promptly by 6:30pm.
  • Jazz Band Students need to be in the auditorium with instruments assembled and ready to play by 6:00pm.

CONCERT DRESS

A reminder of our concert dress requirements is listed below. We call it “Concert Black.”

Ladies:

·       Black dress pants or long black skirt. Ladies, long means that your skirt falls below the knee.  (no black jeans/jeggings/tights/yoga pants)

·       Black Blouse– longish sleeves (no sleeveless shirts or spaghetti straps)

·       Black Dress Shoes

·       Jazz Band students will also wear a white tie

Gentlemen:

·       Black Dress Pants (no black jeans/track pants/sweat pants)

·       Black, Button-Down, Long Sleeved Shirt

·       Black Socks and black dress shoes

·       Jazz Band students will also wear a white tie

RECEPTION – PARENT HELP NEEDED

To celebrate our student’s performance, and our senior’s final concert, we will host a reception in the cafeteria.  Parent donations and help are needed – please look for an e-mail from parent organizer Sarah Gambetta for information on how you can help.

SENIOR DINNER

To celebrate their final concert, it is a tradition for the Seniors to go out to dinner.  This year’s event will take place at Little Sorrento’s on Wednesday, 5/18 (the day of our concert) at 4:30pm.  The cost is $25 per person (cash). Please RSVP with payment to senior Trevor Griffiths by Tuesday 5/17.

SENIOR BIOS AND SENIOR WILLS

Your YHS Band Senior Bio and/or Senior Will is due by MONDAY 5/9, to be featured in our Spring Concert program/Yearbook.  Please e-mail your completed Bio/Will to Ms. Kluga.  A worksheet on how to write a Senior Bio and a Senior Will is attached.

MUSIC FESTIVAL & SIX FLAGS TRIP SAT. 5/21

Our Music Festival and Six Flags trip is coming up! Students are asked to be in their seat, ready to perform, by 6:45am. Students should wear their YHS Band polo, long black pants (please no yoga pants, sweat pants, or leggings) and black shoes.  Students are welcome to bring a change of bottoms/shoes for our time in the park.  The band polo must be worn all day.

PLEASE PACK YOUR STUDENT A BAGGED LUNCH, WATER, AND SNACKS FOR THE BUS. We will use our meal voucher for dinner in the park.

Our itinerary is attached. Parents are welcome to attend our performance!

Between Band, Choir, and Orchestra we have 159 students attending.

MEMORIAL DAY PARADE & BBQ MON. 5/30

Each year, the YHS Band participates in the town of Yorktown Memorial Day Parade. This is our most public event of the year and is an important service for our Yorktown community.  All YHS Band students are required to participate.  Contact me with questions. FYI: students will wear their YHS Band polo, long black pants (please no yoga pants, sweat pants, or leggings) and black shoes.

After our parade performance, all YHS Band students are invited to the 17th annual YHS Band Memorial Day BBQ, at the Grabowski home. A sign-up sheet and information on how to contribute food for this event will be available in the coming weeks.

SWING DANCE CONCERT INFO

What: 13th Annual Swing Dance Concert

When: Saturday 4/23

Time: Dance Lesson 7-8pm / Music and Dancing 8-10:30pm

Where: YHS Gym

Cost: $15 for adults / $10 for students and seniors.  Tickets sold at the door.  YHS Band students are free.

WHEN STUDENTS SHOULD ARRIVE:

1.     Jazz Band – our sound check begins at 5:45. Arrive at 5:30 so you can be ready to play at 5:45.

2.     Students interested in participating in the dance lesson – arrive by 6:45pm.

Students who participate in the dance lesson will receive 2 points of extra credit.

3.     Students NOT interested in participating in the dance lesson– arrive by 7:30pm.

Upon arrival ALL STUDENTS should place their instruments/cases/coats/etc. in their designated warm up rooms. A reminder to respect these spaces – do not touch items that are not yours, and clean up after yourself.

*After students put their personal items in the warm up room, they should report to the ticket table to have their hand stamped for free entrance into the dance. *

SWING CONCERT DRESS FOR STUDENTS

In lieu of the usual concert black, Swing Era attire is encouraged!  Ideas are below and were reviewed in class.

Boys 

Usual Concert Attire: Black pants, long sleeved button-down black shirt, black shoes, black socks

AND/OR Swing Additions: fedora hats, suspenders, solid color or pin striped shirts, colorful ties, spats, jackets.

Girls

Usual Concert Attire: Black top (appropriate neck-line, no spaghetti straps or sleeveless tops), black skirt or dress (appropriately below the knee), or black pants.

AND/OR Swing Additions: polka-dots, saddle shoes, any color 1940’s style dress as long as it has an appropriate neckline, sleeves, and falls below the knee.  When seated to perform, your skirt must cover your knees.
